In Gaia, in the middle of Serra do Pilar, there is a centenary building that goes almost unnoticed in the landscape: it is the Geophysical Institute of the University of Porto.

Created in 1885 behind the Serra do Pilar Monastery, the Institute keeps two secrets from the crowds: 

 - a seismic station built in 1962 by the United States of America, officially for "scientific research", but which put Porto on the map of the cold war between the two superpowers;

 - is the only place on Earth where it is possible to see all 6 bridges that connect Gaia to Porto, from Arrábida to Freixo.

What is the meeting point for the visit?

  • At the main gate of the IGUP, the guide will be waiting for you.

Where can I leave the car?

  • If you come to the IGUP by car, we have parking spaces inside the IGUP. You can park your car on the main avenue surrounded by trees.

Is the IGUP guided tour worth the effort (and price)?

  • We believe so! The guided tour allows you to discover the whole story, from the lie that led to the construction of space to the explanation of earthquakes and nuclear tests!

Who can take the guided tour of the IGUP?

  • All persons aged at least 12 years.

Is it possible to just book the seats, without making the payment?

Can I bring my cell phone or camera during the visit?

  • Yea! All photos are welcome, so you can bring whatever equipment you want, as well as take pictures at any time during the visit. Filming is not allowed.

  • If you are unable to attend the visit, you can reschedule or request a refund.
